Cultural Capital of Canada
Congratulations Whistler!

The Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) has been named a Cultural Capital of Canada
for 2009. This designation was awarded for merit, as determined by the quality of proposed projects and earlier achievements by our community that demonstrate our ongoing
commitment to culture and the arts.

The award includes a significant contribution from the Government of Canada to support special activities that celebrate the arts and culture and build a cultural legacy for our community.

The RMOW recognizes the role that arts and culture play in a community committed to sustainable principles: in enhancing citizens’ quality of life, ensuring economic development, and partnering between cultural organizations, First Nations people and citizens involved in cultural celebrations.

“Whistler is thrilled and honoured to be named a Cultural Capital of Canada for 2009,” said Whistler’s Mayor, Ken Melamed. “Though a young community, Whistler is enjoying building its cultural identity. This designation and the funding for our program – Celebration 2020 – strengthens the cultural aspects of our sustainability commitments. It also signifies the importance of arts, culture, and heritage in Whistler and in Canada, as we prepare to welcome the world in 2010 and beyond.”

The Government of Canada created Cultural Capitals of Canada in 2002 as a national program to recognize and support Canadian municipalities for special activities that harness the many benefits of arts and culture in community life.
