Mother Bear
Featuring the photography of Michael Allen
FREE Exhibit in the Scotia Creek Gallery at Millennium Place
Mother Bear showcases some of the female black bears and their offspring that Michael Allen has studied
in the Whistler area.
“My research uses bear families as the baseline because the moms are the producers and roots of individual
personalities. Knowledge of their daily strategies to feed, breed, raise cubs, compete with other bears and ultimately
survive Whistler’s changing landscape helps us to better understand a population of black bears,” explains Allen.
Michael Allen is an independent researcher/photographer who has been observing the behaviour and
ecology of black bears (Ursus americanus) in British Columbia for 23 years. For the
past 15 years he has focused his study on bears in the Whistler area, where he remains committed to
ski area bear population monitoring and progressive education programs for locals and resort visitors.
He also works as the senior bear viewing guide for Whistler Blackcomb Mountains.
“My mission is to document the unique life–history of individual bears through photography and observation,
and present my findings in a way that helps people to better understand how bears adapt to change caused
by man, climate and other bears. As urban sprawl and recreation areas push further into front–country bear habitats,
black bears are forced to walk a fine line between maintaining natural behaviour and being habituated to human influence.
Knowledge of bears as individuals and an understanding of their unique roles in the overall population helps us
to define requirements for healthier bear–human relationships.”
Millennium Place welcomes Michael Allen to the Scotia Creek Gallery during April and May.
